  • With casting announcements having come out just before the pre-production of Catching Fire, people are already asking whose going to play President Coin. The large-as-life District Thirteen Leader in Mockingjay is not just powerful and capable. She is also manipulative, impersonal and downright nasty when it comes to it. She’s someone we agree with at certain times and, like all politicians, hate at other times. The Hunger Games movies have placed many high profile actors in the places of distant authority. Donald Sutherland (“Dirty Dozen”) made the perfect, quietly dangerous and poisonous President Snow in the first movie. Philip Seymour...

  • Welcome to the final Reaping for the newest director of the Hunger Games. The tried and true method of Twilight and Harry Potter was to switch directors between movies, and it seems Lionsgate Studios is following in their footsteps. The reason: the production is going too fast, and current director Lawrence has announced he won’t be able to keep up with the third and fourth installment. Lionsgate Studios plans to have the same director for both Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two, treating the two part finale as a single movie. So who’s going to...

  • The question for a movie based on a great book is how good can the movie get? However, many critics are asking whether the movie will be able to surpass the book. Mockingjay is considered one of the weaker books in the series with many negative reviews on the ending. Hopefully Mockingjay try to redeem the flaws in the final book. One of the fan’s biggest gripes about Mockingjay is Katniss’s breakdown that began at the end of book two, and endured through half of the next one. Even when she got back on her feet, so to speak, she...

  • The ending of Mockingjay spoilers here! Tough love is the phrase of the day by the end of Mockingjay. Suzanne Collins ended the war within her books with huge, fiery explosions, death traps and gunfire, that claimed the lives of many of her friends. Is this overkill? Some readers said yes, stating that for the rest of the book the ending was overly harsh. Such is war. But will that be in the film? Even with five hours (Mockingjay will be split into two movies) there are plenty of things that will be left out of it. And one can...

  • Josh Hutcherson knows his Hunger Games, and he’s talked about how he clicked with the role of Peeta soon after he read the books. The Peeta he portrays is still smart, still tender, and also comes off as a lot stronger. He added that though he knew Peeta was a beta wolf and Katniss was the alpha, he wanted to make sure the audience saw Peeta’s strong, confident side. Hutcherson is bulking up in preparation for Catching Fire, for the sake of demonstrating Peeta is now well off and well fed in the Districts. If that’s so he may work...

  • In the final book of the Hunger Games series, Katniss starts out in bad shape. It’s not her safety but that of Peeta that has her curled up in the fetal position, and the reader right beside her feeling her pain. However, Jennifer Lawrence has portrayed a stronger Katniss throughout the series. Many of the moments of childish vulnerability are gone. Instead of a book where things go seriously wrong, the movie feels as if it’s purposefully heading to the end of the two and a half hours. However, this is a fair portrayal since Katniss’s moments of weaknesses are...

  • Philip Messina isn’t cutting corners in the Hunger Games movies. The production designer was in charge of the look and feel of the movies, working directly with directors of both Hunger Games and then Catching Fire. He talked a little about the location and filming in North Carolina for the forest Hunger Games arena. He’d built fake trees and fake limbs to increase the density of the forest, and took over two months to build the Cornucopia. The second novel moves around the districts and into the tropical jungle arena, now being filmed in Hawaii. So what will the man-made...
