The final film in the Hunger Games franchise will divide and conquer. Lionsgate Studios has announced that Mockingjay will be split into two parts. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Two will take Katniss’s final adventures and be released in 2014 then 2015, giving fans plenty of time to watch it in theaters, get it on DVD, and speculate about the changing cast and crew through each movie.
MAJOR SPOILERS. The four hundred million dollar question is: where will the movie be split in two? Going by page count, halfway through Katniss is undergoing recovery after Peeta’s shocking attack. Based on this, it’d suggest part one will end before or after Peeta’s rescue from his Capitol tormentors. Either way, the beginning of the next film will be an emotionally charged one.
In terms of chronology it’s hard to keep precise track, since there’s no clear record of the passage of time even by season. But Collins gives a good impression of time slowly passing for Katniss. Also, there are many tender moments to say farewell to the first part of Mockingjay. Katniss befriends Finnick, Katniss gets to know Prim, she begins to connect with a couple people in District Thirteen. Then there’s the one moment of outside peril within District Thirteen, when Peeta barely manages to warn the people of a coming bomb sweep. They take shelter underground and instead of being crushed (literally) Katniss takes the time to make a friend and spend some time with her family.
Katniss’s three great outings are to District Eight where she helps to shoot down planes with explosive arrows, a sorrowing scene in which she watches one of Gale’s death traps bury to death many Capitol factory workers, and then an arena-style trip into the Capitol itself. Though the book spans months, and the journey through the Capitol takes mere days, many anticipate that’s where the split will occur. If so, fans will have a heavy finale to look forward to as some of the most tragic outcomes and deaths occur.
Those are the most likely endings: Katniss’s resolve to be the Mockingjay, the rescue of Peeta, or their journey into the Capitol to assassinate President Snow. It depends on what kind of ending the crew and company wants. Sweet? Bitter? Lost? Inspirational? If the names of the movie are any indication, it should end when Katniss stands up and announces that in return for the safety of her cat and companions, she’ll be the televised Mockingjay.
Do you think the Mockingjay ending will leave you hanging or resolve it satisfactorily till the next year? And where do you think the split is supposed to be? Lionsgate Studios has yet to guarantee they’ll settle the speculation before the 2014 first part will be released.
