Time to Reap the Next Director

Welcome to the final Reaping for the newest director of the Hunger Games. The tried and true method of Twilight and Harry Potter was to switch directors between movies, and it seems Lionsgate Studios is following in their footsteps. The reason: the production is going too fast, and current director Lawrence has announced he won’t be able to keep up with the third and fourth installment.

Lionsgate Studios plans to have the same director for both Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two, treating the two part finale as a single movie. So who’s going to direct this two part film? Christopher Lawrence who snagged Catching Fire had a big thing going on his side: a clear schedule. Now, however other past candidates like David Cronenberg (“The Fly”) and Alfonso Cuaron (“Children of Men”) may be able to free their schedules up to tackle the final movie.

If the reigns were handed to Cronenberg we could expect a Mockingjay just as horrific as the books. Cronenberg has a way of getting under everyone’s skin and giving them the collective heebie jeebies. Cuaron who was handed the reins for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is known for his artistic, organic cinematography.

But the closest runner up to Director Lawrence was Bennett Miller. He’s best known for his recent success in Moneyball, about a baseball team struggling to recruit members and meet the budget in the big league. He has already expressed some interest in the directing of the Mockingjay film, and for now his schedule is all clear. Miller So who do you want? And what kind of movie do you want? Should it be horrific, sweet, bitter, beautiful? It’s time to start thinking about the newest Hunger Games.
